Easy Gift Idea: Make Your Own Refrigerator Magnets
Looking for an easy gift to make for friends and family this holiday season? Personalized refrigerator magnets are simple and fun to create. Here’s how:
- Decide who the magnets are for – a nephew, aunt, friend, etc.
- Open up a word processor and set the font size to 16.
- Start writing playful sentences about that person and their interests. For instance, ‘Andrew loves dinosaurs. I bet he wishes he had a pet stegosaur,’ or ‘Aunt Lucy’s garden is always full of the best smelling flowers and herbs.’ Fill up the page with anything that comes to mind (you can always edit later.) Make it as personal as possible by including family names, nicknames, pets, hobbies, and so on.
- Read back through the page, adding and deleting things as you wish.
- Print out the page (double spaced so you’ll have room to cut out the words.) Decide if you like the font and the size. If not, change it and print it out again.
- Glue the printed page to a magnetic vinyl sheet. If your local sign shop doesn’t offer it, you can find it online.
- Either spray a coat of fixative on top of the words, or cover with a sheet of clear contact paper.
- Next, use a craft knife and a ruler to carefully cut out each word.
See how easy that was? Your refrigerator magnets are ready! All you need to do now is decorate an envelope and give them as a gift. Or create a special set for yourself based around positive affirmations you are currently working with.
Having words that you can move around so easily is a great reminder that, after all, thoughts are things.

I love this–you could make your own poetry magnets!
Hey Prof J: Oh sure! You can do all sorts of things - change up the fonts, whatever. They are so easy to make, and so fun. I came up with the idea when I was about to throw out some outdated magnetic calendars.
This is a great idea and I think even I could manage it :)
You have so much creativity and smarts and you so graciously share it with the rest of the world , thank you …:)
Have you done any ATC cards ?
