Ever wondered why they call it ‘Tiramisu’?
We watched a really stupid movie last night with Angelo’s parents. The film is called ‘The Contract’ and I don’t recommend it, unless you are heavily sedated and recovering from surgery, or you are with a group of people who are good at heckling. We fell into the second category, and had fun picking apart all its cliches and plot holes.
The movie is set in Washington State, so Angelo and I entertained ourselves trying to figure out precisely where it was filmed. We finally decided upon Oregon, but were surprised to discover that it was actually shot in Bulgaria, with a small part in Spokane. (I had no idea that Bulgaria had such beautiful countryside!)
The movie was subtitled which I always find helpful. I write down words as I watch and look them up later. At one point, the main character’s son was slipping on some steep rocks. It was supposed to be a tense moment, but it made me laugh because the boy yelled, ‘Tirami su!’ meaning, ‘Pull me up!’ But all I could think was, ‘Yeah, I could go for a slice of that.’ Later, Angelo explained that they call it Tiramisu because the coffee in the dessert gives you a boost, so it’s essentially ‘pulling you up’ out of a sleepy, post-meal slump.
